Reflections from a Canadian Elder
22nd January, 2009 - Posted by admin - No Comments
I wanted to share this with everyone…from Rev. Elder Diane Fisher, MCC Region 5:Dear Friends,
My heart was touched when I heard the following. I am not sure who it is attributed to, but it is profound:
Rosa sat, so that Martin could walk.
Martin walked, so that Barack could run.
Barack ran, so that our children could fly.
On the day of the inauguration of a new president in the United States, I am given to reflecting on Moments in Time that changed the course of history. These moments are poignant reminders of the promise of the human spirit. They are prophetic times foretelling the continuing unfolding of the Gospel. There have been so many:
The coming down of the wall in Berlin,
The release of Nelson Mandela,
The end of Soviet occupation in Europe,
The rebellion that ousted dictator Ceauscu in Romania,
The ending of the armed conflict in Ireland,
The fight for human rights by Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez in San Salvador,
Pierre Elliott Trudeau establishing the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in Canada,
the ousting of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia,
Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian Independence Movement,
Dalai Lama and his ongoing struggle to free Tibet,
And so many more.
All of these individuals and events share moments in time of tremendous change and courageous spirit. These moments transcended national boundaries and signaled a promise of hope for our world. Today, the United States of America welcomes a new president. The world is holding its breath, eager for a new day of peace and prosperity. It is my fervent prayer that there will be new ways of collaboration, of valuing all people from all nations, and of understanding and mutuality.
I invite you all, regardless of your nationality, to take a moment today and offer a prayer for President Barack Obama, for his presidency, for his safety and for the people of the world who have placed their hopes and dreams in the hands of this president.
It is indeed a rare and profound moment in time.
God Bless,
Rev. Elder Diane Fisher
